Kaia Ladybug / Marion Iowa Mommy & Me Photography

"I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
GOD forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.
I hope you dance....I hope you dance." Lee Ann Womack

The vision of this session was pink tulle, spinning in a field and capturing WONDER! This fall my word for all my photo sessions was "breathtaking" but honestly, I feel like I have finally figured out how to capture more of a "wonder" and I am perfectly OK with that.

I photographed Kaia when she was born and was thrilled to be able to see her again...seriously, I would keep her if I could. Enjoy this "Mommy & Me" playdate and try to resist the cuteness of little Kaia Ladybug's face :)

Dreaming With Your Feet / cedar rapids, ia ballet photographer

"Dancing is like dreaming with your feet!" -Constanze

These last images were shot with pink tulle...You can do a couple of things with it: #1 Stretch it over the lens and shoot through it. #2 Bunch is up over half the lens to get a dreamy gradient #3 Clip is around the edges of the lens for a vignette look.

Puddle Jumper Editorial Session / marion, iowa photographer

Can I just say, if there is one thing I have looked forward to this year, it would be seeing some GREEN GRASS. I feel sorry for my husband and all the whining he has heard from me about everything being ugly and brown, which led to an excuse not to work on some photography projects, followed by making a great argument on how we need to move. Needless to say...I survived and can't wait to get out there and photograph!

This session was supposed to happen when it was a little more green but I caved and shot it early. Honestly, I LOVE it and am happy with my choice.

Now on to some fun things. First, don't let these images deceive you; this little girl was frankly, afraid of the mud and getting dirty...which continues to make me laugh to this day. She looks like quite the trooper out there though.

Second, because this session ranked high on my list of favorites...there are THREE spots available for your kids! 2015, has been full of some fun changes and one of those is getting rid of sessions I don't like to shoot and focusing on KIDS, families & seniors. Throughout this year, I am offering both limited edition spots (like the puddle jumper sessions) and customized editorial themes for clients.

The "Puddle Jumper Sessions" will be available on May 28th, 29th & 30th. The booking fee is discounted for these sessions and there is NO purchase minimum. You can find out more info & reserve your spot HERE.

Had to add this last image because it makes me laugh...we are making it rain people.

History of Birthday Cakes - Jett's Cake Smash

CAKE, n. 1. "A small mass of dough baked; or a composition of flour, butter, sugar, or other ingredients, baked in a small mass. The name is applied"

As I was working on these "cake smash" pictures, the thought of how did Birthday cake begin...got me thinking.  If you know me personally, I am a sweetaholic...I seriously have a problem, sugary foods are my favorite...candy, cake, ice cream, cookies, etc.  After doing a little research on Birthday cakes...I found it was more intriguing than I would have guessed.

The baking of cakes is supposedly traced back to the days of Ancient Greece.  The people would bake a moon shaped cake and put a candle on it, in honor of one of their gods (the candle was a symbol of the moonlight).

While the Greeks created cakes, the Germans are responsible for baking cakes and being the first to use them to celebrate.  Their cake was more like sweetened bread formed into a blob for Kinderfest (when kids put shoes out on Christmas Eve...similar to stockings).  A candle was placed on top to represent the "light of life."

The sugary sweetness of "todays" cakes, didn't come around until the 17th century, where only the wealthy could afford the ingredients and icing decorations...so they became a specialty for the rich.  As time went on more people began baking cakes for important celebrations, birthdays being one of them.  AND the rest is history...we now live in a world where everyone can enjoy BIRTHDAY CAKE...I get my sugar fix...and there you have it.

Now, as for cake smash pictures...Jett's were a blast.  Loved his little diaper cover with his name on the butt!  I photographed him as a baby and boy has he grown in the past year.  He looks so different...and is definitely a cutie!
